It always befuddles me. People who have risen to the top, and gained much personally in so many ways, want to diminish or destroy the near-genius system of government which enabled them to do so well. Is there no wisdom in the streets? Well, on reflection, yes. There’s a lot of wisdom in the streets. Where it seems to have disappeared is in the hallowed halls of Washington. We have people ensconced who seem to have no regard for history and no understanding of human nature. Herod was a mere man. But he must have forgotten that somehow during his sojourn in Palestine. Here he was, minding his own business, persecuting pesky Christ-followers – preserving the peace, so to speak.
He was evidently possessed of a silver tongue. See the slavish, non-thinking response of the people when Herod (unknowingly) gave his final speech. He obviously made them feel real good about him:
Act 12:21 – 23 On an appointed day Herod, having put on his royal apparel, took his seat on the rostrum and {began} delivering an address to them. The people kept crying out, “The voice of a god and not of a man!” And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and died.

I meet my good friend Dave about every Friday morning – have been for years. He told about his trip to a business convention in the Midwest a couple of weeks ago.
In a ride in a limo from the airport to his hotel, he and the driver got to talking. The driver said he was voting for Obama. Dave: “Why would you do that?”
The driver offered a couple of reasons.

I guess the uniqueness of these United States of America is wearing too ho-hum with some people. This “noble experiment” is unique in all history. Our Constitution is unique in all history. Nothing like it before, a few attempts at imitation since. It was written in the milieu of 3 concerted days of prayer to our Creator God by our Founders. There are foundational reasons these United States of America have had the blessing and power and prosperity we have enjoyed. We are living now on borrowed capital as we increasingly repudiate our foundations.
